Panasonic PT-MZ16KL Laser Projector – Summary: Highlights, Value Proposition, Pros and Cons

The Panasonic PT-MZ16KL won our 2020 Best in Class Uniquely Capable Award. I was shocked at how much brightness the Panasonic PT-MZ16KL could produce all while delivering outstanding out-of-the-box color reproduction. The out-of-the-box picture quality was great with several of its preset picture modes delivering accurate colors.

The PT-MZ16KL utilizes a 3LCD imager instead of the single DLP chip found in many high brightness laser projectors which improves its bright color reproduction. Using 3LCD instead of single chip DLP is also a factor in the projector’s excellent contrast. The PT-MZ16KL is rated at 3,000,000:1 (with dynamic contrast) and the unit native contrast also appears to be good as well.

The Panasonic is the brightest projector I have ever had in my test space. By utilizing multiple solid-state laser modules, the PT-MZ16KL can deliver an amazing 16,000 lumens brightness with excellent reliability. The projector’s laser/phosphor light source is rated for 20,000 of maintenance-free operation. The PT-MZ16KL can produce more than enough brightness to overcome the ambient light found in most large lecture halls.

In addition to delivering an outstanding picture, and the PT-MZ16KL had every connection and feature you would need in a museum or large lecture hall installation. The PT-MZ16KL has all the connections you would expect on a higher-end business/education class projector including HDMI 2.0b, Digital Link (HDBaseT), 3G-SDI and DVI-D. While the PT-MZ16KL is a WUXGA projector it can accept 4K@60P content via HDMI and DIGITAL LINK (HDBaseT) inputs for increased clarity and detail.

From its rear Information monitor to its wide variety of projector mapping and edge blending adjustments, the PT-MZ16KL is feature packed.

The PT-MZ16KL is compatible with a total of seven lenses ranging from a 0.480–0.550 Short Throw Zoom lens to a 4.14–7.40 Zoom lens so you have plenty of installation flexibility. The unit’s liquid cooled laser light engine combined with a sealed optical assembly and a reusable air filter ensure years of carefree operation. Panasonic PT-MZ16KL owners also receive a 3-year parts and labor warranty.

A quick search shows that there are not many 15,000+ lumens business WUXGA laser projectors in the PT-MZ16KL price point. The main competitor is the Epson Pro L1755UNL that I reviewed last year. Both units are excellent models but the Panasonic PT-MZ16KL is 1,000 nits brighter, lighter, and more compact. The Epson Pro L1755UNL does offer 4K Pixel shifting but I didn’t have the opportunity to compare it side-by-side with the PT-MZ16KL to see if there was a noticeable difference. Regardless, the image from the Panasonic PT-MZ16KL was razor sharp and I would probably give it a slight edge over the Epson when it comes to color accuracy. If you are looking for a high brightness, well featured installation projector with great picture quality you should definitely consider the PT-MZ16KL
