1080P Projectors

The 1080p projectors category includes the latest projectors with true HD 1080p resolution. See below for a list of 1080p projector reviews and information pages.

1080p resolution projectors are often referred to as Full HD (as opposed to 720p). Until recently, 1080p projectors typically referred to home theater projectors. That’s no longer the case as more and more business and education projectors are now higher resolution before and count 1080p as one of those resolutions.

What is 1080p? It’s an image that’s 1920 pixels across, and 1080 pixels down. From a practical standpoint consider it to be 2K resolution (close enough).

1080p projectors are full HD.

Let’s start with the home theater side: 1080p HD projectors are essential for enjoying the high definition picture quality that are produced in all major blockbusters today. Oh, 720p can be OK, but remember we’re talking large screens, projector owners can appreciate higher resolution far better than someone with a 50″ LCDTV.

Just about every home theater projector selling today for over $1000 in the United states offers native 1080p. We’ve just begun to see 4K resolution projectors – sometimes called Ultra-HD. At the moment though (but not for long, 4K projectors start around the price of a car (and not an inexpensive one at that). If you are in the market for a home theater projector system, and not prepared to put a dent into your equity line 1080p is the standard.

On the business – educational – commercial projector side, we’re now seeing higher end projectors move up from WXGA (1280×800) – which is just a touch higher resolution than 720p. While WXGA projectors start around $500 or so, 1080p projectors are finally showing up under $2000, but most are high power, feature laden projectors costing several thousands, or even more.

Popular 1080p projector brands include: Sony, Panasonic, Optoma, Epson, Mitsubishi, and InFocus.

ABOUT 1080P PROJECTORS

For perspective, on the home theater side, consider Blu-ray discs. They are recorded at at 1080p resolution. A 4K standard for Blu-ray is in the works, but we’re not there at this time.

We do an annual home theater report in which we review the top competitors on the market. We don’t consider projectors with less than 1080p resolution, considering those lower to be more basic home entertainment projectors. On the commercial side, 1080p capable projectors are being used in scientific and engineering applications, architecture and photography. You would be unlikely to find a native 1080p projector in a high school, but they are being installed into college classrooms.

1080p home theater projectors range from under $800 up to prices well into five figures. Projector Reviews has reviewed 1080p projector units costing up to $30,000 so far, however, we have also reviewed a Sony 4K projector that lists for $24999! Ultimately 4K projectors will drive down the prices of the higher end 2K – 1080p projectors!

Panasonic PT-DZ770UL
This commercial projector is pretty high end, with a $17,000 range list price (sells for way below that), offers 7000 lumens dual lamps and a range of interchangeable lenses. Serious for auditoriums and 24/7 applications
